CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has the ignominy of recording the highest number of ragging complaints among the five southern states.
Since 2009, TN has received 160 ragging complaints, followed by Kerala and Karnataka, figures from the national anti-ragging helpline show. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have lower complaints.
Of the complaints received from TN, 144 were from male students.
In 2013 and 2014, the state received 32 complaints, while nine have been registered so far this year. Most complaints are made by students from engineering and medical colleges.
The chief problem behind this menace, say experts, is that several cases go unreported as many students fear repercussions. Helpline staff say complaints from states like AP are lower as many colleges are in rural areas, where students may be unaware or hesitant to report ragging.
For students to open up, colleges need to have multiple anti-ragging measures. Creating a space for healthy interaction among seniors and juniors is another aspect educational institutions should work upon.
